With the delivery of the
seventh spacecraft in the Intelsat-IX seriesIntelsat 907in
early 2003, SS/L has built 31 fixed-satellite
services spacecraft for Intelsat, nearly half of its historical
fleet, and significantly more than any other manufacturer.
The seven SS/L-built, improved,
high-capacity Intelsat-IX communications satellites began service
in 2001, with Intelsat 907 launched in 2003. They replace the Intelsat-VI
series spacecraft and are on orbit to provide enhanced services
for customers of this global satellite services provider.
The Intelsat-IX spacecraft are
multi-frequency communications satellites that provide voice, video,
data transmission, and distribution to virtually any location in
the regions around the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. These spacecraft
are among the world's largest and most powerful commercial communications
satellites.
Intelsat-IX features an improved
satellite switched-time division, multiple-access subsystem within
its payload to achieve more efficient traffic loading on a number
of its transponders.
SS/L delivered nine Intelsat-VII/VIIA
spacecraft beginning in 1993. Like Intelsat-IX, Intelsat-VII spacecraft
are multi-frequency communications satellites providing voice, video,
data transmission, and distribution services to any location in
the regions around the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific oceans. The
powerful Intelsat-VIIA satellites offer increased coverage and flexibility
with 19 independent, interconnectable coverage areas.
The Intelsat-V series pioneered
global satellite telecommunications. They were the first Intelsat
hybrid satellites, capable of providing service in both C- and Ku-bands,
and the first to reuse the frequency bands by spatial separation
and polarization diversity, permitting some frequencies to be used
four times.
